David E. Ralston
Georgia's Speaker of the House, David Ralston has called the North Georgia mountains home for the majority of his life and professional career.
Born in Ellijay, Georgia, David gained his interest in the law from observing the work of his father, Willard Ralston, who served as the Gilmer County Clerk of Court for over thirty years.
Upon graduating from Gilmer County High School, David attended Young Harris College and North Georgia College and State University, where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree. He then received his law degree from the University of Georgia School of Law.
David's legal career began as an Associate with the Athens, Georgia firm of Cook, Noell, Tolley & Aldridge in 1980. In 1983, at the encouragement of Blue Ridge Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge Bobby C. Milam, David returned to his North Georgia roots and opened the Law Offices of David E. Ralston in Blue Ridge, Georgia where he has practiced for the past thirty years.
David is a past President and long standing member of the Appalachian Judicial Circuit Bar Association, and has previously served on the Board of Governors for the State Bar Association of Georgia. He is also a member and past President of the Fannin County Chamber of Commerce and the Blue Ridge Arts Association.
Additionally, David has proudly served his community as a member of the Georgia General Assembly for most of the past twenty years. In 1992, David was elected to the Georgia State Senate where he served until 1998, when he was elected to run as the Republican nominee for Georgia's Attorney General. In 2002, David was elected to serve in the Georgia House of Representatives.
During his tenure in the Georgia House of Representatives David previously chaired the Judiciary Non-Civil Committee, and was elected by his peers to serve as the 73rd Speaker of the Georgia House of Representatives in 2010, a position to which he was re-elected by the Georgia House of Representatives in 2011, 2013 and 2015 and continues to serve the citizens of the State of Georgia in today.
David was named as "Georgian of the Year" by Georgia Trend magazine for 2010 and is consistently a member of that publications annual listing of "Most Influential Georgians."
